AFP has reported that Lithuania has ben targeted in an "Intense" Cyberattack coincidentally just after Vilnius imposed on the rail transit of certain goods to Kaliningrad - The Kremlin had already threatened reprisals against the Baltic nation.
In a tweet the Lithuanian Defence Ministry said "Lithuanian state institutions and companies are under intense DDoS attack" "It is likely that similar attacks will continue in the coming days, especially in the transport, energy and financial sectors," the post added.
Jonas Skardinskas, the head of Lithuania's National Cyber Security Centre, told AFP that secure servers had been among those targeted in the attack, which he said "probably" came from Russia, confirmed by the Russian Hacker group Killnet who have already claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, which it said were a direct result of restrictions imposed on Russia by Lithuania earlier in June.
What is a DDoS Attack
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service or network by overwhelming the target or its surrounding infrastructure with a tsunami of web traffic.
